Hotels List

We used to spend a lot of time researching places to stay.  I find it mind-numbing and usually its all luck despite what you read online.  So here is a comprehensive list of the places we’ve stayed, how much they cost and a little info.  I have shared this with many people and hope it helps you save time!

Morocco

*Marrakech – Riad Riva – 20 Euro plus city tax, good location, no sign, but easy to find, beautiful courtyard and pool

Marrakech – Riad dar Nael – $25 incl. breakfast, nice staff, hard to find

Todra Gorge – Auberge Cavaliers – $19, breakfast extra, right next to gorge

Hassilabied (Merzouga) – Camels House – 35 Euro/person/night in desert with camel ride

*Midelt – Riad Villa Midelt – 33 Euro – TV, huge bed, excellent breakfast, outside of town

Fes – Fez Dar – ~30 Euro plus city tax, excellent location, nice staff

Meknes – Riad ma Boheme – 19 Euro plus tax, tiny room, not serving dinner when there

Vietnam

Hanoi City Hostel – $14 with breakfast, quiet, nice owner, good location near street pho, private

Sapa Graceful Hotel – $10, good location, bathroom very wet, private

Ninh Binh – Ngoc Ahn Hotel – $18, nice people, rented bikes

Dong Hoi – Mau Hong Guesthouse – $12, nice owner and location, private

Phong Nha – Easy Tiger – $8 dorm, 4 people to one bath, very social, decent food

*Hue – Amigo Hotel – $12,nice staff, near backpacker street but down alley, private

*Nha Trang – Pho Bien Hotel – $15, very clean, 50m from beach, private

Dalat Backpacker’s Intercontinental – $9 shared bath, $5 dorm, got kicked out at 6 pm, weird place and very loud

*Ho Chi Minh – Hung Thinh – $15, very quiet, clean and very close to everything, hard to find, private huge beds

Phu Quoc – Langchia Hostel – $12 dorm, social clean and close to beach

Phu Quoc – Dong Xuan Hong Guesthouse – $30, very clean and close to beach, private

 

Cambodia

Phnom Penh – Lovely Bubbly Place – $5.80 dorm, big beds, clean, social

Kratie – Le Tonle Guesthouse – $12 clean but rooster crows all day, far from center, private fan

Ban Lung – Balcony Guesthouse – $9 soft bed, 10 min walk from center, on town lake, private

Siem Reap – Mon Papa – $7, 10 min walk to center, private with fan

Battambang – Asia Hotel – $10, decent location, private, fan and hot water

Sihanoukville – Sunday Hotel – $16, construction early, private w/ aircon

*Koh Ta Kiev – Coral Beach – $20 bungalow, great food, $10 boat, cold bucket shower

Otres 1 – Jungle of Cambodia – $12, rats, roaches and termites, private shithole

Otres Beach Guesthouse – $20, clean, hot water, good wifi, private with fan

 

Thailand

Bangkok – Khaosan Baan Thai – ~$16, 10 min from backpackers street, quiet, shared bath

Bangkok – Wild Orchid Villa – $19, great location off Rambuttri, shared bath aircon no window

Bangkok – Phiman Riverview Guesthouse – $15, dark and dirty and loud, private fan

Ayutthaya – Baan Lotus Hotel – $15, cool building, didn’t rent bikes, private wifi not working

Sukhothai – TR Guesthouse – ~$10, good location near bus to ruins, private with fan

Chiang Mai – Julie’s Guesthouse – $12, fun place but scam, would only let us have most expensive room, staff not very nice, private with fan

Chiang Rai – The North Hotel – $6 dorm, very close to bus station, fan

Trat – Sangjun (Guy) Guesthouse – $9, basic with fan and shared bath

Ranong – Sintavee Hotel – $7.50, fan, basic, good location, private

Koh Chang – Sawasdee Resort – $11, elec at night only, no wifi, bungalow with private bath

Koh Tao – Keng Bungalows – $15.50, basic, dirty towels, up hill from Mae Haad bay, private

Krabi – Good Dream 2 – $11, fan, room very hot, good wifi, shared

Phang Nga – Muang Tong Hotel – $15.50, a/c, good location, sporadic wifi, private

 

Nepal

Kathmandu – Elbrus Home – $10, first night in neighboring hotel was bad, shared bath hot water

Hille – Deepak Guest House – thin walls but decent beds and thick blankets, share bath

Ghorepani – Super View Guesthouse – great view, very thin walls and low ceiling, share bath

Tadapani – Himalaya Tourist Guesthouse – smoky common area and charge for hot shower

Ghandruk – Heaven View Lodge – private bath, warmish shower

Pokara – New Annapurna Guest House – $20, new bldg, clean and decent location, lost laundry

 

Laos

Huay Xie – Sabaydee Guesthouse – $10, clean, private no a/c

Pak Beng – Unknown – $9, no wifi, private fan

*Luang Prabang – Kounsavan Guesthouse – $5.50 dorm, social place w/ breakfast best beds

Vang Vieng – Chillao Guesthouse – $5, flooded, worst beds, private

Vientiene – Funky Monkey – $14, social, bath on first floor, shared bath

Thakhek – Phonepadith Hotel – $9+, hard bed, bit far from center, private

Tha Lang – Saibaydee Guesthouse – $6, thin walls, good BBQ, private

Ban Nahin – Phamarn View – $9, near center, private no wifi

Myanmar

Senggigi, Lombok – Family Garden Homestay – $13, friendly, good location, fan, private

Gili Trawangan, Lombok – Kia Yazo Homestay – $17, bit dark at night, very clean & quiet, a/c private, cold water

Labuan Bajo, Flores – Gardena Hotel – $16, hot bungalow, no wifi, cold water, fan, private

Labuan Bajo, Flores – Komodo Indah Hotel – $12, basic, wifi, fan, private, cold water

Bajawa, Flores – Hotel Johny – $9, basic, moldy, private, have nicer rooms too

Moni, Flores – Maria Inn – $12, fan, no wifi, con artist owner, private

Maumere, Flores – Beng Goan II – $12, a/c, TV, dirty, no towels or toilet paper, private

*Ubud, Bali – Adi Homestay – $14, very clean, good breakfast ,hot water, private, fan

Ubud, Bali – Tutick Homestay – $12, good wifi, clean, nice people, private, fan

 

Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur – Hostel Cosmopolitan – ~$13, clean, organized, resident cat, shared, a/c

Georgetown – Kimberley House – $16, very clean but very loud, shared, a/c (also stayed in dorm which was $7 pp)

*Melaka – Old Town Guesthouse – $15, well run, clean, shared, a/c

*Tioman Island, Salang Beach – Ella’s Place – $16, bungalow, private, fan, wifi

Semporna – Holiday Dive Inn – $23 with dive package, a/c, private

Sukau – RB Lodge – ~$16 or $67 for 3D/2N package with food and boat tours, food was pretty good, bungalows are very basic, private

*Sepilok – Sepilok B&B – $18, good breakfast, nice staff, walk to RDC & orangutans, private

Miri – My Homestay – $15, breakfast, tiny room, good location, a/c, shared

Sibu – Lehdo Inn – $21, very clean, good location, nice staff, private

Kuching – Marco Polo Guesthouse – $15, breakfast, shared

 

Singapore

Footprints Hostel – $11 for dorm, breakfast, a/c, good location

 

Brunei

BSB – Apek Utama Hotel – $26, good wifi, not near anything but easy water taxi to town, clean, private

 

Turkey

Historia Hotel – Istanbul – $30 (low season), including excellent breakfast, great location, bathroom smelled, safe, mini-fridge, TV, a/c
